Platform: PS3 (Download-Only Title)
Price: $7.99
Players: 1-2 player local co-op, online leaderboards

Easily one of the best modern shmups I’ve played. It’s a sequel to an old amiga shooter. You have three different elemental weapons that you upgrade independently. Enemies and rocks are weak to a certain element. You have a recharging dash move with L2 that not only gets you out of sticky situations, but is great for point pick-up combos and fishing out weapon upgrades. Co-op makes things more hectic, but the boost in rate of fire you get while sticking close to your teamate adds a really cool coordination aspect. It has more depth than a lot of shmups, but not to the point where there is too much on your plate — it’s just right. Great game at a great price for anyone who has a PS3. Look out for me on the online leaderboards :)

so i decided i needed to sign up for a game rental service to save some money. i’m moving in august, so i figured i’d try out GamesN’Flix. i sign up for the trial, build my queue, and every single title is “on order.” from what i read, “on order” basically means it’ll be a long time before i see the game (if ever). reviews typically didn’t have a very nice opinion of GNF so i didn’t feel like wasting my time and money — i canceled the GNF account (didn’t cost me anything, as i was only on a trial).

so then i signed up for gamefly and things are already looking better. it’s a bit more expensive, but i should have a game soon. i also get a year subscription to PSM.

anyway, if you are interested in gamefly — use my referal link for a discount :)

In this tutorial I will be explaining how to do simple cel shading in maya7. This should work in some popular game engines, but it also works in SAGE (relevant for fellow UNT students). I’m sure you can get the same effect in other popular 3D software (3dsmax, lightwave, etc) as well. You can see it used in Terrible Television on the player and some of the environment. Unfortunately, this works best with static models that don’t have complex animation. Simple animation should be okay, but once you get bending and squishing, it tends to result in complications. And if your output will be image/video rendered through maya, you’d be better off just using maya’s toon rendering. This is strictly for real-time applications such as games.
