The game contest took place December 5th, 2006.

Shining Storm (previously named Shitstorm) is the game i worked on for 2D Game Art in fall 2006. This was my first time taking the course. I was teamed up with 3 programmers and i was the artist. I did all the visuals for the game. A friend of mine in japan by the name Yuichi Yoshigiwa (AKA Firsttime Delicates) did the music and sent me mp3’s for the game — you can find more of his stuff here.

This project was completed as a group project with Riley Cardova and myself in the early morning hours of December 12th, 2006.

The 3rd project’s goal was to embody characteristics of the nomad or nomadic life through electronic media art. nomads naturally move around and there would have to be something that dictates where they move next. knowing that, we created a device that fictional nomads could use to find a new place to set up. more than that, our project attempts to make slight notes on the relationships between man and machine. There are plenty of devices that we as humans direct and control. There are even devices that we as humans use as aids to help us get to our destination, such as car GPS systems. We thought it would be interesting to create a device that would decide and tell the human where to go.

When powered up, the device has a direction decided for you to follow. it will give you negative feedback such as loud noises if you are not close to being pointed in the right direction. if you are close to being pointed in the right directions, red LEDs will light up and help guide you in the correct direction. When you are pointed in the right direction, 3 green/orange LEDs in the center will light up, indicating that you should procede forward. Just like with a car GPS system, you make turns. The device will decide a new direction and you will have to re-adjust and continue to proceed on your journey, wherever it may lead you. Every journey is also unique!

Gaming has always been my passion. In highschool i taught myself how to make maps (aka levels) for the half-life engine. I rarely find time to completely finish these projects, but they’re always the projects that i enjoy the most. Level design plays such a key role in multiplayer first person shooter gameplay and it’s exciting being able to bring out the best in games by making great maps. The screenshots below are from an unfinished counter-strike: source map i made back in 2004-2005 called de_collateral. It’s completely playable and relatively complete, but needs visual refinement and performance optimization.

This was completed in the early morning hours of November 30th, 2006. For my second project in interactive art, i wanted to make something i would enjoy having around my house. i came up with the idea of making a wind chime, but instead of having it make the typical chime sounds, i thought it would be interesting to have digital music as the output. The nice part about using a keyboard microcontroller and being dependent on being connected to a PC is that i can easily swap out sound files to create totally different soundscapes and moods. I am interested, however, in eventually developing a standalone, wireless version that outputs the sound itself rather than being dependent on a PC.
